South Georgia (53°57’-54°55’S; 35°40’-38°20’W) lies 1,290 km (802 mi) south-east of the Falkland Islands and approximately 2,000 km (1243 mi) east of the tip of South America. It is 175km in length and its width varies between 2 and 40 km. More than 70 islets, stacks and rocks surround the main island, combining to give South Georgia a land area of 3,755 km2 (1,450 mi2). |
